Background and Situation

Pfizer Global Manufacturing (PGM) is a network of manufacturing Sites producing product on behalf of Pfizer Inc one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies. In Australia, PGM has several Sites including its main Site at West Ryde. The Site has about 200 staff and supports the manufacturing of products for Australia but also for other Sites throughout Asia. In response to a changing manufacturing landscape and newly formed leadership team, the West Ryde Site sort to improve its business development performance and to create greater manufacturing efficiencies in an effort to reduce cost / waste.

How We Helped

In October 2007, Palladium Group, Inc. worked closely with the leadership team at PGM West Ryde to develop strategies aimed at improving the bottom line whilst investigating new growth opportunities. With Palladium’s help, the team quickly learned how to use the balanced scorecard methodology to focus on high-impact strategic initiatives and communicate performance to all employees at the Site. For several years, PGM West Ryde undertook yearly business planning activities which remained disconnected from what was actually happening at the Site. Most reporting was ad-hoc and utilized traditional manual methods such as Microsoft Excel® and PowerPoint®. During the strategy development and execution phase, PGM West Ryde sort Palladium’s help in creating a data entry and reporting system that would be functional, easy to manage, accessible and adaptable. Palladium then worked with the leadership team and implemented the Executive Strategy Manager (ESM), simplifying data entry, communications, and version control.

Results

The leadership team commenced reviewing its strategy on a fortnightly basis and used the ESM tool to review performance, drilling down through the Strategy Map to assess overall performance and then at the same time investigating deep into areas that required immediate attention. Within three months of implementing the balanced scorecard methodology and support through ESM, PGM West Ryde greatly improved its results in the areas of operational performance and new business development opportunities. By the end of 2008, the Site had achieved remarkable cost efficiencies and had also begun to attract additional overflow business from other PGM Sites. For 2009, the Site has established three Strategy Theme Teams and is managing the Site scorecard accordingly. This new approach reflects the maturity of the Site and is highly associated with the level of visibility all levels of the Site have. According to Margaret Lialios (PGM West Ryde, Technical Services), "we are able to fully understand and appreciate the overall strategy and what each Department and individual is doing to contribute. For the first time, our strategy is not a secret, but something that is shared with the whole Site – at formal meetings and of course through ESM”.
