Many organizations achieve strategic organizational alignment by cascading the corporate themes, objectives, measures, and initiatives into the business and support units. The ESM supports both a direct cascade of the strategic elements and a "hybrid" approach where specific elements are cascaded and others are derived at the business or support unit level. Aligning the organization to the strategy is the third step in the Execution Premium Process(XPP).
As the cascaded scorecards are built in the ESM, the Alignment tab offers a view into how the objectives, measures, and initaitives are cascaded, identifing potential areas where there are gaps and disconnects in the strategy. Once reporting beings, the Alignment tab displays performance status indicators, enabling the leadership team to quickly identify trouble spots and uncover how deep the poor performance travels into the organization.
Organizations which have been successful in making strategy execution a core competency have turned to the ESM PBSC module to implement a strategically-aligned performance management process. As part of the ESM, the PBSC module enables individuals within organizations to rapidly develop and align personal objectives (including measures and targets) to enterprise and business unit strategic objectives. Realizing the diversity of organizational culture, the PBSC fields can easily be edited to fit your specific needs. The PBSC provides organizational leaders a view of enterprise goals and how they are executed by individuals.
The PBSC module also contains a simple competency development process to facilitate employees through their creation and management of personal development plans.
Additional features of the PBSC Module Include:
Overall, the ESM PBSC module builds organization-wide accountability for business results
The ESM uses best practice templates to capture data elements around themes, objectives, measures, and initiatives so that the strategy is consistently and efficiently cascaded. These templates can be edited to ensure the right data is captured to support a healthy strategy management process. Once the corporate templates are created, data can be preppopulatted in cascaded scorecards to ensure rapid and consistent development. View Tutorial: Creating Templates
In addition to the ESM best practice database of 8,000 objectives and measures that can be searched, organizations with cascaded scorecards can compile their own library of objectives and measures, and make this custom library available as the cascaded scorecards are constructed. ESM can contain both default and company specific visual measure charts for quick population of cascaded measures. All of the libraries can be configured and managed by client administrators in a user friendly interface. View Tutorial: Internal Library
The ESM wants your scorecard implemenation to reflect your organization's vernacular and become part of how you manage strategy. To drive this shift within your organization, your client administrators can configure virtually all ESM language, reflecting the key terms and directions that deifne your strategy management processes.
Although strategy is cascaded from the top of the organization down, reporting will often occur from the cascaded scorecards back up to corporate. As part of the alignment process, when measures are linked from a child scorecard to it's parent, data can then flow up automatically. This data flow frees up time spent calcuating numbers in strategy review meetings and enables your team to focus on strategic dialogue, discuss implications, and action items.
