Managing in a downturn - our tools can help

In a recent article in McKinsey Quarterly (Sept 2008) they wrote about managing IT during a downturn. They stressed the importance of not making across the board cuts, but that it was now more important than ever to look at IT's role in the business and be more strategic (read selective) in what investments and reductions are made. Our strategy maps, scorecards, and initiative management processes and practices can help companies navigate these treacherous waters in a resource constrained world. We should listen for these cues during our client and prospect conversations and think about how we can help them make better decisions that will address short term issues, yet still position our clients for longer term success when things turn positive. Remember those who make the better decisions now will do better (survive longer) and be positioned for the next upturn in the economny.

BSC users outperform non BSC users

Market value, book to market and net assets were key measures in this study, put out by Elsevier's "Advances in Accounting, incorporating Advances in International Accounting" and written by Philip Reckers and J. Timothy Sale.

The ESM works in the Middle East

I'm in a beautiful hotel in Bahrain as I write this entry. My window views span across downtown Bahrain and I can't miss the classic sky scraper icons Bahrain is known for. The energy here is incredible. I believe this energy is pervasive throughout many of the countries in this region. I sense the energy when working with clients. There is a strong desire to advance, build upon their success and work towards excellence in strategy execution. The organizations I am working with pick up the ESM and become "experts" within hours and are ready to deploy the same training within 2 days. There is a genuine desire to raise the bar in their organizations. This is why I believe the ESM is so successful in the Middle East.

Olympic records, ESM records go hand in hand

I've been watching the first few days of the 2008 Beijing Olympics in awe of all the world records that are being broken. Just last night the US men's relay swim team "smashed" the previous world record by several seconds, in a sport where tenths of seconds are a long time. It's fitting that come August 2008 when the Olympics are in full swing, the Executive Strategy Manager is posting a record performance of its own.

FBI achieves success with their Strategy Management System

A colleague of mine just shared with me a nice article on one of the Executive Strategy Manager's clients, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The FBI has been listed among a dozen or so other government clients on the Executive Strategy Manager website for some time but today they receive the spotlight.

ESM user Dubai Electricity & Water Authority Inducted into the BSC Hall of Fame

The Balanced Scorecard--created by Drs. Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton--is the world's predominant strategy execution framework. Based on the simple premise that "what gets measured is what gets done," the BSC is also a performance management philosophy and system that links strategy to operations. Launched in 2000, the BSC Hall of Fame Program publicly honours organisations that successfully use the BSC to achieve and sustain performance results. The 106 organizations inducted to date represent a broad cross-section of private- and public-sector industries from more than 19 countries across the globe. A Steuben crystal Rising Star, designed by Robert Cassetti, is presented to senior officers of each winning organization.

The Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) provides electricity and water to nearly 800,000 customer accounts in the emirate.

Own it, Share it, Live it

One commonality I see with all successful strategy management programs is an emphasis around communicating the Balanced Scorecard and overall strategic destination to all employees in the organization. I see some organizations struggle from one reporting period to another with trying to keep all the scorecard data up to date.
